Fall is the beginning of the rainy season in Seattle but everything looks sunny to me.
Maybe it’s because so much of what I read is optimistic.
I read a couple of blogs by writers living in joyful abundance when many people would focus on the deprivation. Gluten-Free Girl Shauna James Ahern lives with celiac disease and is determined to help other celiacs. She has “YES” tattooed on her wrist and celebrates everything she can eat. No Impact Man Colin Beavan’s sacrifice is self-imposed. He’s attempting to reduce his contribution to global warming and environmental degradation — living with no car, no plastic, and minimal electricity — and writing about how much happier and healthier he is.
I’m also a new subscriber to YES! magazine, which reports on and encourages engagement in “a just and sustainable world”. I first thought it sounded too crunchy for me. It is pretty crunchy. But it’s also inspiring.
What I love about this writing is that it acknowledges that some things about our lives and our world suck, and then says “here’s what we’re doing about it.”
